DALLAS (KDAF) — It’s no secret that teaching is one of the hardest professions out there. But how much do Texas residents really know about the demands of being an educator?

A new report by Twinkl that analyzes common misconceptions and opinions about teaching, identifying the states where residents believe teachers are the most underpaid and overworked.

The study looked at the annual salary that Americans think their state’s teachers should make, versus the reality of how much they actually make. It also looked at how many hours teachers should work based on their income, versus how many hours they actually work.

Texas ranked as one of the most overworked and underpaid. $73,105 – that’s the annual salary that Americans think their state’s teachers should make. In reality, the average teacher salary across all 50 states in the U.S. is about $62,756. In Texas, the average teacher makes $58,887.

83% believe that teachers work more hours than they should based on their income – The average teacher works 51.9 hours per week, but Texas teachers work over 54 hours on average each week, which is the highest among all states.

Here are the top five states with the most significant differences between their teachers’ actual average weekly working hours and the number of hours residents suggest they work per week:

State Actual Avg. Working Hours per Week Weekly Working Hours Residents Suggest Overwork Difference
    Texas 54.7 40.2 14.5
    Colorado 53.4 40.2 13.2
    Arizona 52.9 40.0 12.9
    Arkansas 52.7 40.1 12.6
    Kansas 53.4 40.8 12.6
