DALLAS (KDAF) — A new study by Hypernode has revealed the states where data privacy and security concerns are most common, and Texas made the list.

The research analyzed Google Keyword Planner data regarding an array of terms concerning data privacy and protection, including simple searches for data protection laws in a state, e.g., ‘data privacy law California’, to searches for online data protection software, e.g., ‘free VPN’.

Texas ranked fifth, where the average monthly search rate is 827 per 100,000 residents.

New York took the top spot, analyzing terms close to 220,000 times on average per month. This is the highest rate nationwide, coming in 79% above the US state average search rate of 632 searches per 100,000 residents.

Virginia followed in second place, and then Washington and Nevada in third and fourth.

States most concerned around data security

Rank Location Average Monthly Keyword Searches Keyword Searches (Per 100,000 Population)
    1 New York 221,802 1,133
    2 Virginia 85,804 984
    3 Washington 68,622 878
    4 Nevada 26,806 839
    5 Texas 252,353 827
    6 Utah 28,184 825
    7 Oregon 34,753 821
    8 California 313,292 804
    9 Illinois 99,977 797
    10 North Carolina 82,485 761

Milan Bosman, Commercial Director of Hypernode, commented on the study: “It’s interesting to see which states are wary of their data privacy and security, especially with states differing broadly when it comes to legislation protecting their residents online. While several of the most concerned states are in fact among the most well-protected online, a few states showing concerns see more complicated and less comprehensive protections online, currently.”
