A group of kittens and their mother were rescued earlier this week near Kennywood.

It began when a female kitten was found by a family as they left Kennywood Park.

The cat was found on the ramp to the parking lot. It was crying on the hot pavement when it was rescued.

That promoted Rescue and Relax cat rescue on Edgewood Avenue to search for more kittens.

At least four kittens and the mother were rescued thanks to the work of volunteers.

Kennywood allowed the volunteers to search the area and will alert Rescue and Relax if any more kittens are found.

Rescue and Relax tells KDKA Radio if you find a kitten, it is important to leave the cat where you found it. They offer this advice.

“If you discover kittens in your shed, under a porch, or in the bushes, there is likely a mother cat nearby providing them care. Leave the kitten(s) where you found them and watch for mom from a distance. You can leave wet cat food or water, but do not give kittens cow's milk!”

Then, begin contacting cat rescues to see who has space available to take in the cats.

They say its important that a mother is also rescued along with the babies.

“These Kennywood kittens demonstrate how a single kitten is often part of a larger family that could all use help finding a safe, loving home. If mom is left behind, she will continue to have several litters of kittens each year, and their litter mates may grow up feral and reproduce on their own beginning as young as 4 months old.”

Kittens that are separated from its mother face greater health risks due to the lack of antibodies they usually get from their mother.

Cats stay with their mom until about 12-weeks-old.

“So next time you find a lost kitten, search for a rescue that can help reunite it with its mom.”

Places like Rescue and Relax need your help to care for rescued kittens. You can help by mailing or dropping off donations to: 117 Edgewood Ave Pittsburgh PA 15218.
