The end of April marked the end of an era in Oakland. At least, that’s what we thought.

Months after Dave & Andy’s Homemade Ice Cream closed its doors following Andy Hardie’s retirement, the famous shop is reopening under new ownership.

University of Pittsburgh junior Sarah Kasten, along with her father, are now owners of Dave & Andy’s with plans to reopen early in September.

“After Andy decided to retire, it was obviously very hard for the whole Oakland community to see such a beloved local staple go,” said Kasten. “We were really blessed and fortunate Andy Hardie . . . trusted us and gave us the opportunity to carry on their legacy of the store.”

With an opening date of September 7 planned, Kasten says customers will experience the same homemade ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet and waffle cones they are used to.

Three former employees came in and showed Kasten and the staff all of the famous recipes to ensure it’s the same flavors customers are used to.

“We still have the equipment so the flavors will be remaining the same,” said Kasten. “We have over 200 flavors of ice cream.”

Other than some new coats of paint, Kasten says customers will be met with the same Dave & Andy’s experience they’ve been used to for the past 40 years.

In addition to now being a business owner, Kasten is a media and professional communications major with a minor in economics at Pitt.

As if that wasn’t enough, Kasten is also on the Panthers cheerleading squad and can be seen at football, wrestling, volleyball and other Pitt sporting events.

If you’re looking for a job, Kasten says while they currently have some employees, they are always looking for new faces.

Kasten adds the reaction to Dave & Andy’s reopening has been met with nothing but positive reaction from the Oakland and Pitt community.

“It’s just a lot of excitement and joy and a lot of people have been really great and they let us know if there’s anything we need to reach out to them,” said Kasten. “They’re super helpful and kind.”
