A World War II landing ship returned to Pittsburgh yesterday. News Radio KDKA's Timira Rush has the details.

The LST-325 arrived in Pittsburgh on the North Shore traveling from Evansville, Ind. LST Cruise Director Ken Rupp tells KDKA Radio there are 45 volunteers on board the ship.

“We got young and old, we got male/female, we got veterans, we got non-veterans, we got a whole cross-section of people that just enjoy sharing the ship,” said Rupp. “Bring the ship to people so they can reconnect with a possibly a father, a grandfather or grandmother that might have build the ship, served on the ship or a ship like it.”

The ship played a major role in the Allied powers' victory in World War II.

The hull was laid in 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania after it was commissioned it served in Sicily . . . did beach landings,” said Rupp.

During the invasion of Normandy, it made 43 trips across the channel to support D-Day.

The ship will be docked near Acrisure Stadium and Riverfront Park with tours beginning August 30 to September 3.
