Weather was once again a big story Friday night, as lightning caused delays, cancellations and postponements for the second straight week. But, in the games that were played, there were some impressive showings from a few local players.

This season, KDKA Radio will again nominate players each week to join the KDKA Radio Super 7 Awards watch list. Every Monday, a new crop of players will be unveiled based on their efforts that previous Friday night. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will announce the winners of the award for each WPIAL classification, as well as the Pittsburgh City League.

Here are the top performances from Week 2:

    Jayden Floyd, Leechburg

Leechburg is out to an impressive start in 2024 and, thanks to a strong second half Friday, the Blue Devils were able to remain unbeaten.

Floyd led the charge, rushing for 254 yards and four touchdowns as Leechburg overcame a one-point halftime deficit to beat Serra Catholic 48-27.

The senior has rushed for 466 yards and eight touchdowns in the first three weeks of the season.

Floyd has a Division II offer from Bloomsburg.

    Ryan Messina, Elizabeth Forward

Messina had a great year in 2023 with over 1,700 passing yards, and he’s already making a big impact in 2024.

On Friday, the junior passed for 189 and two touchdowns, and rushed for two more scores, as the Warriors beat East Allegheny 41-14.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback helped Elizabeth Forward to a much-needed win. The Warriors lost their first two games, each by a single point.

    Alex Tatsch, Latrobe

Tatsch is one of the WPIAL’s top recruits, and he proved why Friday night.

The senior racked up 251 rushing yards and four touchdowns as the Wildcats picked up an impressive 42-28 win over Norwin.

Tatsch has now rushed for 495 yards and scored nine touchdowns in the first three weeks of the season.

A 4-star linebacker recruit, he is committed to Penn State.

    Armand Hill, West Mifflin

A year ago, Hill dazzled as a freshman, racking up massive rushing performances week in and week out. He’s not showing any signs of a sophomore slump.

Hill rushed for 171 yards and a remarkable six touchdowns Friday, as the Titans crushed Baldwin 49-0.

Last year, Hill averaged over 13 yards per carry. The Titans are now 2-0 to start the season.

The 5-foot-8, 170-pound back has already picked up offers from Pitt, Penn State, West Virginia, Michigan and others.

The 2024 high school football season continues Friday, as KDKA Radio will bring you broadcast coverage of Mars vs Aliquippa.
