A Pittsburgh police officer is in the hospital, recovering from injuries sustained while trying to break up a fight on the South Side early Saturday morning.

The incident occurred as Sergeant Andrew Robinson attempted to make an arrest in the 1500 block of East Carson Street. The fight started inside the bar Oddballs.

The sergeant's brother, State Senator Devlin Robinson, tells Marty Griffin on KDKA Radio that his ankle was broken.

“When it broke, it kind of froze in place at a nasty 90-degree angle,” said Sen.
Robinson. “They got him into the hospital and they quickly reset it before there was any nerve damage or anything like that so, we’re happy for all the first responders, that responded, not just the police.”

Officer Robinson could be laid up for at least five months.

Several local leaders released a joint statement following the incident.
