What started out as a curiosity has turned into a Facebook page with over 151,000 Facebook followers alone.

The Odd, Mysterious & Fascinating History of Pittsburgh is celebrating 10 years and on Tuesday, was recognized by Allegheny County Council.

A proclamation was read during a meeting that says Odd Pittsburgh is, in part, “a popular and unique social media account founded in 2014. Mr. Schalcosky investigates the most extraordinary, enigmatic and forgotten tales of Western Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh’s history.”

John Schalcosky, the founder of Odd Pittsburgh has been a frequent guest on KDKA Radio for over nine years.

Listen : Classic episodes of The Pittsburgh Oddcast

We asked Schalcosky to give us his top five favorite things about starting Odd Pittsburgh and what it has become.

The Connections – Not just to each other in the present, but also with the past. Realizing that history is a living, breathing thing that continuously shapes us.

The Community – In the 21st century, having a unique opportunity to connect people from all walks of life and unite us through shared stories.

The Rediscovered Past – Being a curious observer and historical investigator, I’ve had the privilege of bringing forgotten tales and stories back to life.

Memento Mori – They say you die twice: once when you leave this world, and once when your name is spoken for the last time.
Having the opportunity to bring back those who have been lost to time, even for just a moment, is a gift—one that reminds us that to be remembered is, in some way, to live on.

Inspiration – Knowing that Odd Pittsburgh has inspired so many people to think differently—not just about Pittsburgh’s history, but also about the world around them. Encouraging curiosity, questioning the ordinary, and looking at things from new perspectives has been one of the most rewarding outcomes of this journey.

We’d like to congratulate Schalcosky on 10 years of giving us more reasons to be curious and proud of the town we love so much…Pittsburgh!

Schalcosky will be Larry Richert’s guest on The Big K Morning Show Thursday morning at 8:35. You can listen here .
