KDKA Radio Editorial: Huge Tax Hike Not The Only Solution

Allegheny County could have an $81 million deficit next year. The county executive’s solution is the biggest property tax hike in county history.

Not a good look for someone who passed out raises immediately after taking office but couldn’t say what it would cost.

Sara Innamorato’s 2025 spending plan actually calls for a 3% increase in spending when an immediate spending and hiring freeze with exceptions for critical services is in order. Reasonable people agree a higher millage rate is appropriate after no increases since 2012.

But why not ask property owners to do that over a period of years? And instead of token budget trimming, significant budget cuts are a must at a time when tax revenue is shrinking due to reduced property values.

That’s a big problem Downtown, but better incentives and fewer roadblocks would draw much needed development.

Unfortunately, a vibrant economy doesn't appear to be part of the county executive's agenda.

A resourceful journalist can do the following: Investigate for fraud waste and abuse, publish county salaries to include the benefit packages they receive, and finally get a run down on their growth based agenda and the required incentives to produce such growth, if they even have such goals?

This tax hike she's saying is needed to save the county only goes to say how bad Fitzgerald managed the county and now these stupid democrats put someone more unqualified in to run and crush taxpayers.
