    Walgreens to close over 1,000 stores, Pittsburgh locations could be affected

    Walgreens plans to close around 1,000 locations over the next three years.

    The drugstore chain has been struggling with tight reimbursement for prescriptions and other challenges.

    Wallgreens says about 500 store closures will happen in the current fiscal year. It isn't known yet if any Pittsburgh area locations will be shuttered.

    In a filing with the SEC, Walgreens says the locations that will be closed, “prioritizes estimated cash flow benefits, underperforming locations, and lease expirations.”

    The company reported this morning a net loss of more than $3 billion in the final quarter of 2024.

    Walgreens operates several locations in the Pittsburgh-area including: (None of these stores have been announced closed, as of October 15, 2024).

    In the release on the SEC website , Walgreens expects to close between 900 to 1,000 stores by the end of 2027.
