A controversial measure before the city Planning Commission concerning homeless shelters is on hold for now.

Councilmember Theresa Kail-Smith says they're getting a four-week continuance that's after at least 60 people came to speak at Tuesday's Planning Commission meeting over concerns that Commission would have such broad powers to establish homeless shelters or alternative housing without so much as a public hearing.

Along with Councilman Anthony Coghill, she told the residents, “I will say that part of the good is that they have agreed to at least, a public process, which is huge and that’s because of you,” Kail-Smith told those in attendance. “The power in your voice is amazing through these halls and I just want to thank you for it.”

The next Planning Commission meeting will take place in a larger space and at night.

The community should be allowed to speak about their feelings about these people moving into their neighborhood and what is going to be done with them if they are using drugs or being a nuisance. If these people aren't connected to mental health services, drug treatment and assistance with cleaning (I see filth all the time in the shelters, roaches and bedbugs 🤢), the community will suffer.
