In a move to enhance its trooper recruitment process, the Illinois State Police (ISP) has introduced changes to its pre-employment criteria. The recently signed Public Act 103-0312, set to take effect on January 1, 2024, brings about modifications to the Illinois State Police Act. Under the newly established "Option Three," current law enforcement officers with a minimum of three years of continuous service within the same law enforcement agency can now join the ISP ranks more expediently. ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly emphasized the importance of recruiting individuals dedicated to public safety. He stated that enlisting officers who have completed basic law enforcement training and possess three years of on-duty experience, coupled with comprehensive training from the ISP Academy, will facilitate the swift deployment of highly skilled troopers across the state. The alterations also extend to "Option Two," broadening the eligibility criteria for members of the armed forces. State Representative Angelica Guerrero-Cueller (D-Chicago) applauded this expansion, noting that it offers discharged service members more opportunities to apply their skills for the well-being of Illinois residents. Senator Patrick J. Joyce (D-Essex) further emphasized that simplifying the eligibility process for veterans is a way to acknowledge their dedication and sacrifices. Acknowledging the challenges faced by honorably discharged service members in meeting collegiate requirements, Joyce welcomed the effort to make the process more accessible. Regardless of the chosen option, all applicants must satisfy the following prerequisites: 1. Be at least 21 years old 2. Have no felony convictions 3. Possess a valid driver's license during application 4. Be prepared to accept assignments anywhere within Illinois Applicants must also meet one of the following options: Option One: Hold an associate degree or possess at least 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university. Officially sealed transcripts showing degree or credit hour completion are mandatory during the application submission process. Option Two: Education requirements are waived if the applicant meets one of the following criteria: 1. Honorable discharge with at least one qualifying medal from the United States Armed Forces 2. Active member of the Illinois National Guard or a reserve component of the United States Armed Forces with at least one qualifying medal due to honorable service during deployment 3. Honorable discharge with proof of hostile fire pay or imminent danger pay during deployment 4. A minimum of three years of full active and continuous service in the United States Armed Forces, including active duty with the State of Illinois under Title 10 or Title 32 of the United States Code by order of the President or the Governor of the State of Illinois. An honorable discharge is necessary. For this option, a DD-214 Long Form must be provided during application submission. Option Three: Education requirements are waived if the applicant fulfills all the following criteria: 1. Successful completion of basic law enforcement training 2. Minimum of three years of continuous full-time service as a peace officer within the same police department 3. Presently serving as a peace officer. For this option, a copy of the applicant's law enforcement officer certificate must be submitted during the application process.
