You've probably noticed--there's an egg supply problem right now. Is it time to set up chickens at home?

Some people are responding to the egg price rises with humor. But if the prices stay high, keeping your own chickens becomes more attractive.

Why are the prices so high?

The spread of avian influenza has affected more birds than the last outbreak in 2015. As of December 2022, 57 million birds across 47 states have been infected with the virus.

Not only are eggs short on stock but foods containing eggs, like baked goods, are impacted.

Are we allowed to keep chickens in Colorado?

Yes! In most parts of Colorado you can keep around 6 chickens in your backyard, as long as you stick to some safety rules.

You will need livestock or fowl permit in Denver. Before you get started check with your municipality to learn the specific regulations in your area.

Usually there are some simple rules around how far from the house or fence the coop needs to be and how many chickens you can keep.

    Setting up a coop

It doesn't have to be expensive to set up your chicken coop either. Chickens don't care if their accommodation is fancy, as long as it's dry, safe from dogs and other animals, and has an area for nesting.

    How many chickens?

Chickens get lonely if they're on their own, so start with a minimum of three.

In most places you can have up to 6, which will provide you with a good amount of eggs.

Now it's time to check your breeds.

It can be easier to start with adult chickens rather than chicks, but make sure they are still laying. Chickens don't lay forever and some breeds are better layers than others.

You don't want to get chickens only to find out there's no eggs!
