MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO) — Alexandria and Platte are moving on to the second round of the Class ‘B’ State Amateur Tournament after claiming close wins on Friday.

    ALEXANDRIA 5, FLANDREAU 3

Alexandria advanced in the tourney following a narrow 5-3 win over Flandreau.

Cole Wenande broke a scoreless tie in the sixth with a three run double.

Flandreau would score the next three runs to even the game. That included the game tying single from Rick Weber in the eighth inning.

However, the Angels had an answer. After an intentional walk to Wenande, Tyson Gau blasted a two run double to left field to grab the lead.

That was enough for Riley McSherry who threw a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, six walks and seven strikeouts.

PLATTE 1, DELL RAPIDS MUDCATS 0

The second game on Friday saw Platte edge one of the tournament favorites in the Dell Rapids Mudcats.

It was a pitcher’s duel the entire game as Platte’s Grant Doom and the Mudcats’ Kris Regas were both effective, striking out a load of hitters and limiting hits.

Dell Rapids’ second hitter of the game got a hit and then they didn’t have a base hit the remainder of the game.

The Killer Tomatoes got a lead-off double in the eighth and they would bunt him over to third.

Five pitches later, Sheldon Gant would hit a weak ground ball to short, leading to a play at home, but the runner was safe as an error was ruled on the catcher who dropped the ball.

That unearned run gave Platte the first lead of the game.

The Mudcats loaded the bases in the eighth, but Doom would strikeout Dalton Lehnen to end the threat.

Dell Rapids got the tying run aboard in the ninth, but they couldn’t score as Platte claimed the 1-0 win.

Doom threw a complete game, one hit shutout to win. He did walk seven, while also striking out 15.

Kris Regas suffered the loss, despite throwing a gem. He allowed an unearned run in nine innings on five hits. He struck out 16 and threw 156 pitches.
