EAGAN, M.N, (KELO) — The Minnesota Vikings’ rookie first-round pick QB J.J. McCarthy will undergo surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee.

The Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell made the announcement Tuesday morning during a press conference. McCarthy sat out of practice Monday with what the team called knee soreness.

McCarthy played in the team’s preseason opener against the Raiders on Saturday, going 11/17 with 188 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT.

The Vikings haven’t set a timetable for McCarthy’s return. Veteran QB Sam Darnold is expected to be the starter in week 1 against the New York Giants.
