MADISON, S.D. (KELO) — The Dakota State football team opened the 2024 season on the right foot, cruising past in-state rival DWU, 34-3.

The two teams struggled to find offense in the first half. Dakota Wesleyan was unable to score, while the Trojans put up just one touchdown.

Tyce Ortman scored from a yard away to make it 10-0 in the second quarter. DSU added a Carson Sauseda field goal as time expired in the first half.

The first several minutes of the second half were scoreless, but the Trojans would go on to score three touchdowns in the next ten minutes, including two from Ortman.

Tray Hettick also found Melek Ford for a 47 yard touchdown.

All of that second half success helped the Trojans roll to the 34-3 win.

Ortman rushed for 89 yards and three scores for DSU. Hettick threw for 194 yards and a score.

For DWU, Carter Robinson rushed for 103 yards as the QB, but his passing was just 9-21 for 66 yards with three interceptions.

The all-time series still leans toward DWU, but the Trojans are back within three games. The Tigers lead the series 40-37-1.
