MULVANE, KAN. (KELO) — SDSU is set to kick off its football season Saturday afternoon at Oklahoma State, and several Jackrabbit fans are on their way to Stillwater.

Jackrabbit fans gathered early this morning to hit the road for Oklahoma State on the fan bus, and some of them had this road trip circled on their calendar for a long time.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” SDSU fan Don Houwman said. “We’ve gone to the Texas trip the last two years, and when this came up, there was no doubt we were on it.”

About 50 SDSU fans boarded the bus, both in Brookings and Sioux Falls to start the trek south. After a stop for lunch in Omaha, it was full speed ahead to Mulvane for the night before making the final leg of the voyage to Stillwater, Oklahoma, in the morning. For many on the trip, the joy comes from the comradery.

“You just get to meet a lot of really nice people in all from your industry,” SDSU fan Lois Houwman said. “So, it’s just fun to get to meet new people.”

For others, the trip is an opportunity to experience another football power in its home environment. Boone Pickens Stadium holds over 52-thousand fans, more than two and a half times the capacity of Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

“It’s nice to go to another venue and to see a really big stadium with a really big crowd and a great tradition,” SDSU fan Allen Lee said. “It’s fun to be part of that environment.”

Despite matching up against the 17th-ranked Cowboys, expectations are high among these Jacks fans as SDSU carries a 29-game winning streak into the season opener.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the Jackrabbits kick off this season,” Lee said. “They had such a successful season last year. We’ve been Jackrabbit fans for years, so I’m very excited to see what they can do against a very good Oklahoma State team.”

It’s about an hour and a half drive from the hotel to Oklahoma State. The plan is to take part in some of the tailgating festivities before kickoff at 1 p.m.
