Last-minute goal leads SDSU to draw with Drake

BROOKINGS, S.D. (SDSU) — South Dakota State allowed a late second half goal, but found an equalizer in the 90th minute to close out a 1-1 draw against Drake on Sunday, Sept. 8, in a non-conference meeting at Fishback Soccer Park.

The Jackrabbits had multiple opportunities over the course of the match. SDSU registered three shots on goal in the first half and another six in the second half, while owning 62% of the possession.

The Bulldogs had just one shot on goal over the 90 minutes of action and made the most of it. The 80th minute saw Drake take one of its two corner kicks of the day. The cross found the Bulddogs’ Izzy Snowden in front of the goal whose initial attempt hit the side of the goalpost. The rebound found the foot of Drake’s Eve Blakely whose shot hit a Jackrabbit on the goal line, however the assistant referee ruled the ball crossed over the line to give the visiting side a 1-0 advantage.

SDSU went on the attack for the next 10 minutes. The Jackrabbits produced six shots before entering the final minute of play. Freshman Solala Nasu struck a shot at the top of the box which was initially saved by Drake goalkeeper Addie Ford. The ball bounced towards the penalty mark where another SDSU freshman, Zoe Wittkop , stepped in and easily booted it into the back of the net to tie the score with 54 seconds remaining.

South Dakota State and Drake finished out the match knotted with a 1-1 score. The Jackrabbits ended the meeting with a 4-2-1 record while Drake stands at 0-4-3.

Notes

• South Dakota State outshot Drake 24-6, which included a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. The Jackrabbits also had 15 corner kicks to the Bulldogs’ two.
• The goal by Wittkop was the first of her college career. Nasu was credited with the assist on Wittkop’s goal. it was the first for her as a Jackrabbit in just her second appearance.
• Avery Murdzek finished with a team-high five shots for the Jacks. Adrianne Agbayani followed her with four shots, while she and Hailee Christensen shared honors with an SDSU best two shots on goal apiece.
• Taryn Hettich and Kaycee Manding each played the full 90 minutes for the Yellow and Blue.
• SDSU has now outshot its opponent in every match during the 2024 season.
