    Wallner singles in two as Twins earn key win over Cleveland

    CLEVELAND, OHIO (KELO) — Matt Wallner singled in two runs and Willi Castro homered as the Twins claimed a key 4-1 win over the Guardians on Tuesday.

    Minnesota scored first in the third. Wallner singled in a run with an RBI hit to right field to score Ryan Jeffers.

    Zebby Matthews would allow his only run the next frame, when Lane Thomas homered. The rookie pitched 4.2 innings and allowed just one run on five hits.

    A pair of two out hits helped Minnesota add a run in the fifth.

    Byron Buxton doubled with two outs and then Wallner singled him in to make it 2-1.

    The Twins continued to score with two outs. Willi Castro blasted a two out, two-run homerun in the eighth to push the lead to 18. Minnesota has scored 19 straight runs with two outs.

    THE RECORD

    Minnesota is now 80-71. They sit 6.5 games back of the Guardians.

    The Tigers defeated the Royals 3-1 on Tuesday. It both helped and hurt the Twins. Kansas City is now just 1.5 games ahead of the Twins for the second wild card spot. Detroit is just 1.5 games back of the Twins for the final wild card spot.

    UP NEXT

    The Twins and Guardians continue their four game series on Wednesday.

    Probable starters are Tanner Bibee (3.60 ERA) for the Guardians and Bailey Ober (3.90 ERA) for Minnesota.
