BROOKINGS, S.D. (SDSU) — South Dakota State scored in the opening minute of action and was stout defensively on the way to a 1-0 shutout victory over Kansas City on Thursday, Oct. 3, at Fishback Soccer Park. The win improved the Jackrabbits to 9-2-1 overall and 2-0 in Summit League play, while the Roos fell to 6-4-3 (0-3).

The Jacks took advantage of their first scoring opportunity which eventually turned into the lone goal of the match. Mia Bosch struck a shot at Kansas City goalkeeper Maddie Sibbing. The ball deflected off the fingertips of Sibbing and found its way to Laney Murdzek . Her ensuing attempt crossed up Sibbing as she got an arm on it, leading to SDSU’s Katelyn Beulke winning a battle for the ball in front of the goal and finding the back of the net.

Beulke’s team-leading fifth goal of season came with just 41 seconds off the clock.

SDSU had several opportunities over the match’s next 89 minutes, but couldn’t notch another toward its tally. Beulke watched one of her shots hit the crossbar while she matched Bosch and Murdzek with a team-high two shots on goal. SDSU eventually outshot Kansas City 19-6 on the night.

The Roos produced a strong effort defensively after allowing the first minute goal, however they were outdone by the Jackrabbits. Kansas City was unable to register a shot on goal. It’s the second time this season SDSU has achieved the feat. Contributing to the stellar performance were 90-minute showings from Katherine Jones , Hayley Lindaman and Kaycee Manding , as well as 80-plus minute appearances from Lauren Eckerle and Taryn Hettich .

SDSU avenged a 0-0 draw to the Roos in Kansas City a season ago after winning the previous four meetings in the series. The Jackrabbits now sit atop The Summit League standings with six points ahead of four league members with four points apiece.

    NOTES

    • The goal 41 seconds into the match is tied for the second fastest ever in program history. It’s tied with a goal by Tori Poole in the Summit League semifinals in 2014. The fastest goal came in 18 seconds by Danni Healy in a 2010 match.
    • South Dakota State has outshot every opponent its faced during the 2024 season. The Jacks are also 8-1-1 when holding foes to one goal or less.
    • SDSU improved its all-time Summit League home opener record to 16-1-2.
    • Beulke’s goal gave her a career-high 13 points (five goals, 3 assists) already this season.
    • Maleah Evans played 38 minutes, the most among the Jackrabbits’ reserves.
    • SDSU improved to 50-6-11 in Summit League play under the direction of head coach Brock Thompson . The program is also 59-5-10 with Thompson as head coach.
