BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota State played its first match in the newly renovated First Bank & Trust Arena last Thursday, a three-set sweep for the Jackrabbit volleyball program.

The Jacks set a program attendance record with 2,853 fans for match one at the new facility as SDSU improved to 14-0, matching its best start to a season.

“I dreamed of this,” SDSU sophomore setter Rylee Martin said. “I’m from a small town, and I’ve always wanted to play in a big atmosphere where we have fans that love the community and what we do. And so I was just honestly, I just felt so lucky and so blessed.”

The updated arena saw roughly $66 million in renovations, which include new bleachers, playing surface, video boards and sound system, but it still includes many aspects of Frost Arena.

“The way it came together, the way that we really blend the respect of our history and tradition and the elements that are part of the design, our fans will feel a familiarity and feel comfortable,” SDSU Director of Athletics Justin Sell said. “But you walk in to a totally different experience, probably a different level of energy, a little bit different excitement.”

“Everything was first class college athletics, and the community is the best part of that,” SDSU head coach Dan Georgalas said. “Everything’s shiny and new here, but South Dakota State’s fan base and Jackrabbit Nation, that’s something special.”

On top of the Jackrabbits extending their season-opening win streak, the first night of the new arena meant much more than just volleyball.

“The focus on the arena opener has been on our minds for two years, but this game was about more than that,” Georgalas said. “It was about bringing our community together. This was an event that was just bigger than us, and we’re really grateful to be a part of that.”

SDSU is slated to play at home this Thursday and Saturday, against Omaha and North Dakota, respectively.
