    SDSU, USD play to 1-1 draw at Fishback

    BROOKINGS, S.D. (SDSU) — The first event of the year in the Interstate Series, presented by First Interstate Bank, ended in a draw as the South Dakota and South Dakota State women’s soccer teams tied 1-1 at Fishback Soccer Park on Friday.

    The Jackrabbits claimed an early lead in the meeting. SDSU had a corner kick opportunity in the 16th minute it took advantage of. Kaycee Manding crossed a pass into the box on the corner kick. The ball found Lauren Eckerle who headed a pass across the box near the goal post. Katelyn Beulke gathered the ensuing pass right in front of the goal line and knocked the ball into the net to give SDSU the 1-0 edge.

    South Dakota State’s lead didn’t last long. The Coyotes’ Brooke Conway headed in a goal, thanks to assists from Ashby Johnston and Brooke Nelson, to tie the score a 1-1 in the 29th minute.

    The two sides went into halftime all square. SDSU had a 7-3 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes.

    SDSU began its onslaught on goal at the start of the second half. The Jacks eventually outshot the Yotes 15-3 during the final 45 minutes of play, but were thwarted from notching a game-winner. South Dakota made seven of eight total saves in the second half.

    South Dakota goalkeeper Campbell Fischer finished the game with seven saves, while SDSU keeper Emma Knack recorded three.

    The Jackrabbits are now 10-2-2 (3-0-1 Summit) following the draw. The Coyotes are now 3-6-4 (1-1-2).

    NOTES

    • SDSU and USD are 1-1-3 in the last five meetings between the two sides. The two teams have tied their last two matchups in Brookings.
    • The Jackrabbits outshot the Coyotes by a 22-6 margin including a 9-4 mark in shots on goal. They also had an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
    • Beulke’s goal was her team-high sixth of the season. She also has an SDSU-best 15 points.
    • Mia Bosch had a team-high five shots. She was followed by Avery Murdzek and Hailee Christensen who had four apiece. Several Jackrabbits played the full 90 minutes including Manding, Murdzek, Hayley Lindaman , Katherine Jones and Taryn Hettich .
    • Friday’s match was played in front of 461 spectators. The attendance was the seventh largest for the Jackrabbit program ever at Fishback Soccer Park.

    South Dakota State hits the road for its next two matches. The Jacks begin their away trip with a 6 p.m. match on Thursday in Fargo against North Dakota State.
