SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Big changes are in the works on Avera’s campus along Cliff Avenue.

Tuesday morning, crews brought in heavy equipment to take down the Plaza 3 building.

The 30-year-old structure was most recently used for dialysis and the Avera Transplant Institute. Those offices have been moved to other buildings.

The demolition will make room for a new 6-story women’s and children’s tower.

Avera plans to repurpose or recycle nearly 75% of the old building.

The competition between Avera and Sanford health centers is phenomenal. It is good as it brings state of the art medical care, and competition brings better care for patients. My concern is that they don't over spend their assets and file bankruptcy as hospitals in other states are doing.

It would be nice if hospitals reduced their rates instead of build build build. Maybe our insurance rates would level off
