SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – This month and next give us a chance to learn, honor and celebrate indigenous heritage.

South Dakota was the first state in the country to celebrate Native Americans’ Day.

In 1989, then Governor George Mickelson proposed it as a state holiday. In 1990, it became state law. Since then, dozens of other states have replaced Columbus Day with Native Americans’ Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Next month is designated Indigenous Heritage Month nationwide.

On this week’s Inside KELOLAND, we will share some of the stories we’ve done over the past year, on how people throughout the region are remembering and honoring Indigenous people.
