Still no QB announcement for first Broncos preseason game

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) – When it comes to patience, Broncos Country has proven to have little. Especially when it comes to the quarterback position.

Thirteen quarterbacks have been under center since Peyton Manning rode into the sunset after Super Bowl 50.

And, after the 14th practice in 16 days, the wait continues to see who will be taking snaps in Indianapolis for the preseason opener on Sunday.

“We didn’t talk last night,” offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said, taking head coach Sean Payton’s usual Q&A slot. “I think we’re going to talk this afternoon and solidify that.”

On his 28th birthday, Jarrett Stidham took snaps with the first team. During red zone work, he went 4-4 with four touchdowns, including an incredible one-handed catch by rookie wide receiver Devaughn Vele.

Selected in the seventh round from Utah, Vele has had an impressive training camp.

“He’s been making a lot of those plays all camp,” Lombardi said. “That was a little extra special, but he’s been showing us that all camp so it was pretty exciting.”

Rookie quarterback Bo Nix continued to make strides and a positive impression on the coaching staff.

“He’s been everything we’d hoped for,” Lombardi said after practice. “From where he was drafted, he’s had a really good performance. [He’s] smart. He’s obviously an older player for a rookie, so you hope with that age comes some of that maturity that we’re seeing from him.”

The Broncos’ next practice that is open to the public will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 14, a few days after their first preseason match.
