Nebraska First Lego League Team Places in Top Ten at Florida Sunshine Invitational
Brightly colored robots sat under colorful banners with team names heralding the owners, Legoborci z Oravy, Sumrall NanoBots, and Panhandle Cookie Bytes. The teams and their robots were among 50 national and international teams gathered for the inaugural FIRST Lego League Florida Sunshine Invitational from June 19-22 at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla.
City of Hastings fiscal year 2025 budget book now available online
HASTINGS — The initial draft of the 350-page Fiscal Year 2025 budget book is now available on the Finance Department page on cityofhastings.org. “Staff has done an excellent job preparing their budgets and doing so in record time,” City Administrator Shawn Metcalf said. “Because of these efforts council members have approximately three additional weeks to review the budget compared to last year. A special thanks to Finance Director Roger Nash and our finance department for all their work to prepare the budget. Additionally, a special thanks to HR, Engineering, and others who have put in a significant amount of time preparing items in the budget such as personnel and salary schedules, capital outlay, fee schedules, etc.”
Anti-tobacco education night to be held in Grand Island
The Hall County Tobacco Free Coalition is teaming up with CHI Health St. Francis for a public presentation on the dangers of tobacco products. In the last two years, the American Lung Association reported a 135% increase in young people using e-cigarettes, with the number now around five million users.

Giltner man sentenced after dog found frozen to death
AURORA, Neb. (KSNB) - A Giltner man will spend some time in jail after one of his dogs was found frozen to death in January. According to Hamilton County District Court documents, 60-year-old Kevin Jemison was sentenced on Wednesday to a term of 30 days at the Hamilton County Jail and then two years of probation.

KEARNEY — Tickets have been punched for the 2024 Nebraska American Legion Class A Junior State Tournament. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 am Saturday July 27 with a match-up between the Omaha Junior Bluejays (Creighton Prep) and Vermeer Highplains (Lincoln Southeast). Pickup goes out-of-control on Perkins Street, missing three people at picnic shelter
BEATRICE -- Beatrice Police and fire officials were sent to the scene of a bizarre accident just south of the downtown area. It happened when a roofing company pickup turning from South Fifth to travel east on Perkins went out of control. The truck ended up colliding with a picnic shelter at Gage County Foundation Park, narrowly missing three people sitting there. Police Sergeant Wes Henning says the accident involved a total of four vehicles.
