Brearley 2024 Graduate Paints Unique Mural for Kenilworth's Bubbles and Baskets Laundromat

KENILWORTH, NJ - Recent David Brearley High School graduate and talented artist, Alyssa Amato, was recently commissioned to paint a one-of-a-kind mural at Kenilworth's new and improved laundromat, Bubbles & Baskets. Alyssa sat down with Bubbles & Baskets and TAPinto Kenilworth to tell us more about her passion for art and her future plans.
Tell us when you first became interested in art and what made you continue to pursue it.
Ever since I was a kid I have loved art. I always found myself drawing and painting whenever I had the chance. My dad loved art as well which is why I chose to pursue it.
We know there are a variety of art forms across disciplines, like painting. sketching, sculpture, etc. what do you like the best and why?
Painting is definitely my favorite medium by far. I love the way the paints mix and layer on top of each other. It’s the medium I’ve been working with the longest so I’m more comfortable with it. I’d say drawing and sculpting come in tied at second place.
How did you first learn about the opportunity to do the mural for the laundromat and what made you say yes to do it? Have you done murals before?
During one of my art classes in high school, my teacher reached out to the class and mentioned how there was an opportunity to come into the laundromat and paint a mural. Since I’d never done anything like that before, I was pretty excited. I immediately got Tahra's information and began coming up with ideas.
What’s your creative process like? How do you come up with ideas of what to create?
Most of the time my ideas stem from emotions or topics I find interesting. I figure out the basic layout of my design and search for reference pictures to make sure everything is correct (ex. the bones in a skeleton or specific types of flowers). Then I sketch everything out and change some things as I go.
If other small businesses would like to commission you to do a mural or other artwork, would you consider that?
Yes of course! I’d love to work on other murals. Since this one is just my first, I'm very excited to be given the chance to do more!
Congratulations on your graduation! What now are your post-graduation plans?
I plan to attend Drew University. I’m thinking about double majoring in art and psychology. I just received a five on my AP exam, so that will definitely help me out. I also plan on working as much as I can whenever I can!
