POLICE: Couple’s argument leads to a shooting and drug trafficking arrest in Elizabeth City
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WITN) - Police say an argument between a couple led to a shooting and an arrest for drug trafficking at a home in the east Saturday morning. According to the Elizabeth City Police, around 3:01 a.m. on July 28th, officers responded to the 700 block of Herrington Road about a person who was struck by gunfire. When the officers arrived, Darren Jernigan, 42, was on the way to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center for medical treatment. Police say Jernigan suffered a single gunshot wound to his right arm and was later released from the hospital.
Lowe’s Home Improvement robbery suspect sought by Durham police
DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — The Durham Police Department is asking for the public’s help identifying a person suspected of robbing a large chain store on Saturday night. According to Durham police, the robbery took place around 8:42 p.m. Saturday at the Lowe’s Home Improvement store located at 4402 Fayetteville Road, which is near the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.
Dover's Armstrong earns gold with strong performance in Olympic 4x100 Freestyle Final
The first day of Olympic swimming competition ended with a gold medal for the USA men and Dover High School alum Hunter Armstrong. Armstrong swam the fastest leg on the American's gold medal winning 4x100 freestyle relay in Paris on Saturday. His time of 46.75 was second fastest of all swimmers in the relay finals. Armstrong was the third USA swimmer in the relay, following Jack Alexy and Chris Guiliano and prior to Caeleb Dressel anchoring the relay.

For at least five years, descendants of Marcus Scarborough have been trying to restore the family cemetery on Driftwood Drive on the north end of Roanoke Island. Scarborough, who was a free person of color, was born on Hatteras Island 1839 and was the first person buried in the cemetery, passing away in 1917.

UMO art alumni paint the town
GOLDSBORO — Luis Fernando Henriquez, a 2023 graphic design and art double major alumnus from Warsaw, and Celeste Aguirre Onate, a 2021 fine art alumnus from Goldsboro, are painting the town – literally. The pair is part of a team of three artists, including Maria Feliciano, an art teacher at Spring Creek High School, contracted to create a mural masterpiece in downtown Goldsboro.
