A taste of Canada in the Tri-Cities

KENNEWICK — While Americans prepare to celebrate the 4th of July on Thursday, their northern neighbors are celebrating their country today.

July 1 is Canada Day.

One Tri-Cities business provides a little taste of Canada all year long. Poutine, Eh? serves up the classic Canadian dish, poutine.

"It is fries, cheese and gravy, that is the classic," said co-owner Mallory Chapin.

But, Chapin says Poutine, Eh? doesn't stop at those three simple ingredients.

"Rob (Chapin) has ones with tri-tip on them or grilled chicken and fresh veggies, even pork belly," Mallory said.

While customers eat, they're surrounded by the faces of famous Canadians; from actors and singers to hockey players.

"It just kind of goes hand-in-hand with Canada and poutine, with hockey," Mallory said.

In a place so filled with Canadian pride, one might think the owners hail from the true north strong and free, but Mallory and Rob Chapin were both born and raised in the United states.

"Rob is from St. Louis, and I'm from right here in the Tri-Cities."

So, how did they discover this Canadian Cuisine?

"Just by travelling to Canada and eating it at one of our favorite poutine restaurants and we just decided that it needed to be here in the Tri-Cities," Mallory said. "It's definitely a hidden gem."

Poutine, Eh? has been open for almost four years, and Mallory says there are new people discovering the restaurant and poutine every week.

Poutine, Eh? is located at 3902 Clearwater Avenue in Kennewick. Since it is not open on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, the restaurant celebrated Canada Day early on Saturday, June 29.
