Federal money to help Michigan begin slow work of rare turtle counts
State wildlife agencies in Michigan and Ohio have received nearly $500,000 in federal funding to study rare turtles. The grant is part of more than $7 million distributed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to benefit rare and declining fish and wildlife and their habitats across the country. Other states receiving funding under the program this year include Minnesota, Iowa, Hawaii and North and South Carolina.
Michigan lawmaker calls for stricter penalties for cyberattacks against hospitals
(CBS DETROIT) - As McLaren Health Care system works to recover from last week's cyberattack, one Michigan lawmaker wants to increase penalties for hackers who target health systems. McLaren was hit with outages to its information technology system and phone lines on Aug 6. In an update on Monday, the health system is working with cybersecurity experts to determine if patients or employees were impacted. Officials say all radiation therapy units at Karmanos Cancer Institute care facilities in Michigan are operational. (The Center Square) – Michigan's health department is taking applicants for a new “Michigan Racial Health Equity Think Tank.” The forum group is one part of the fiscal year 2025 state budget’s $35 million in Racial Disparities Task Force recommendations.
