BETTERTON — Residents may resume normal beach activities including swimming, watersports, and fishing. According to the Kent County Health Department results from the latest samples at Betterton Beach are at an acceptable level for bathing.

As of 5 p.m., July 18, the beach was re-opened to the public.

Around noon on Wednesday, the Health Department shut down Betterton Beach due to a sewage leak from one of the pump stations.

The beach has been posted with signage warning “no swimming.”

Wednesday afternoon after the announcement, the beach was near empty, a stark difference after having almost 1,000 people in attendance over July 4th.

The numbers of visitors to Betterton Beach during the summer are usually close to 400 on non-holiday weekends.

The Department will resume the regularly scheduled testing of the beach. For any questions or concerns about water quality, please contact Environmental Health Department at 410-778-1361.
