In a bold and blazing expression of gratitude and patriotism to the selfless military personnel and first responder individuals, Rotary of Kent Island once again rolled out its project, Flags for Heroes. The Rotary Club brings together professionals and community leaders worldwide to work on projects that improve lives and promote peace. Through meetings and collaborative efforts, Rotary members tackle local and global challenges, focusing on areas like clean water, education, and health. With a commitment to selfless service and inclusivity, Rotary welcomes everyone to join in its mission of making a positive difference in the world.

This particular initiative is an opportunity for individuals and corporations to show their support to veterans and first responders who give their time and talents to their community by planting large American flags at multiple locations along Route 50 for drivers to see as they travel for Memorial Day. This is also a fundraiser to help support Rotary of Kent Island’s many projects and activities.

The deeper meaning of Flags for Heroes is explained by William Silva, the chair of the Flags for Heroes committee and member of the Rotary of Kent Island for three years. He discussed the personal significance the project holds for him. “I am personally involved to honor my father who was killed in WWII. Every member has a reason for participating. Many people are involved.”. An item of interest that I noticed is that first responders have been included with military personnel. According to Silva, the events that transpired during the COVID-19 pandemic have shown the vital role emergency workers play in our communities.

The fundraiser is a visual expression of gratitude and reverence for those who have dedicated themselves to helping their neighbors and show appreciation for the United States. This is simultaneously an attempt to further good within the community and inspire others to do the same, wherever they are. The Rotary of Kent Island began setting up the flags along Route 50 on Thursday, May 23, ahead of Memorial Day.
