Rolling Fork announced on Tuesday the release of an 8-year-old Barbados Rum aged in 10-year-old wheated bourbon barrels. The rum is titled “Wheated Wonder” and hosts a suggested retail price of $99. Just 900 bottles are available.

“We’ve been excited about this one for a while now,” Rolling Fork co-founder Turner Wathen said in a news release. “The combination of 8-year-old 100% molasses rum distilled in Barbados and the rich flavor and soft texture that a wheated bourbon cask brings to the party makes this one of our most exciting releases.”

Rolling Fork’s rum spent two years aging in wheated bourbon casks. Though the source of the bourbon is undisclosed, the brand shared that they were sourced from Frankfort, Kentucky. Of course, the biggest Frankfort distillery is Buffalo Trace, which is known for its wheated bourbons, so that’s a good guess. However, Frankfort has other distilleries, as well, such as Castle and Key, so we can’t be certain.

“We love the flavor profiles that developed in this rum after it aged in the 10-year-old wheated bourbon casks,” Rolling Fork co-founder Jordan Morris said in a statement. “There’s a complex mix of orange peel, dark fruit and buttery pastry layered over some great caramel notes. At cask strength — 114.9 proof — it’s a great rum experience.”

Rolling Fork’s Rum is available online and in specific markets, according to the brand.

    What is Wheated Bourbon?

Wheated bourbons or “wheaters” have more wheat in their mashbills than any grain outside of corn.

A bourbon’s mashbill must contain a minimum of 51% corn, then the distiller is able to use rye, wheat and barley as they please. In wheated bourbons, rye is typically replaced by wheat.

Wheated bourbons tend tilt more toward the soft and sweet end of the spectrum, and boy are they popular.
