Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was brutally heckled and booed at the Republican National Convention on Monday as he announced Kentucky’s delegates were voting to nominate Donald Trump for president.

McConnell, who has been a regular target of Trump’s attacks, officially endorsed Trump in March. “It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States,” McConnell said in a statement at the time.

“It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support,” the long-serving GOP leader added. McConnell blamed Trump for the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6th in a scorched earth speech following the events of that day.

In the years following, Trump targeted McConnell with angry vitriol, including attacking McConnell’s wife with childish insults widely seen as racist. McConnell is married to former Trump Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who Trump repeatedly called “Coco Chow” in unhinged social media posts. Chao later asked the media to stop repeating Trump’s “racist taunts” directed at her.

McConnell, who is stepping down as the GOP leader in the U.S. Senate after a historic run, poured tens of millions of dollars into J.D. Vance’s winning senate bid in 2022. McConnell said Vance was a “great choice” when asked by reporters for a reaction to Trump tapping Vance as vice president. McConnell praised Vance despite the two having clear policy differences, particularly related to foreign policy and support for Ukraine, which McConnell calls vital to American security and Vance immediately seeks to end.
