There's no question that hot dogs are one of the most popular summer foods of all time, but if you're planning on grilling up some wieners anytime soon you'll want to check the packaging carefully first.

On July 15, Kentucky-based AW Farms recalled 6,900 pounds of hot dog products which were produced without federal inspection, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) .

FSIS launched an investigation after being notified by a state public health partner about a problem with the ready-to-eat hot dogs , which have a shelf life of 45 days and have been produced on a variety of dates since approximately May 30, 2024.

While there haven't been any confirmed reports of adverse reactions associated with the recalled products yet, FSIS has concerns that the hot dogs might be in the refrigerators and freezers of restaurants or hotels. Establishments are cautioned not to serve the products, which should instead be returned or thrown away.

Potentially affected packages include 10-lb. boxes containing two 5-lb. vacuum-packed packages labeled “FRENCH CITY FOODS 6” 12-1 HOTDOGS,” as well as 10-lb. boxes containing two 5-lb. vacuum-packed packages of frozen “PORK, BEEF, DEXTROSE, SALT, SUGAR MAPLE GEO BROWN ALL MEAT HOTDOGS." You should also be on the lookout for 10-lb. boxes containing two 5-lb. vacuum-packed packages containing frozen “GEO BROWN ALL BEEF HOTDOGS."

As Newsweek reported, food produced for consumption in the United States is regularly inspected at the federal level to ensure it's safe for people to eat.

Anyone with concerns can contact AW Farms at tjwells611@gmail.com , call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854), or send a question via email to MPHotline@usda.gov .
