The Best New Book Releases Out July 30, 2024

I believe in judging books by their covers—and also their titles. Not exclusively, of course. There are plenty of great books that suffer from mediocre covers or titles, while the books themselves are incredible. But with so many books out there to choose from, allowing a great cover or title to catch your eye can be a helpful way to sort through the overabundance. Titles and covers are meant to give you a peak into the heart of a book, after all. So doesn’t that mean we should be using titles to judge books, at least a little bit?

Good news! It looks like spooky season is starting early this year, horror fans! July might be the hottest month of the year, but August horror releases are really going to bring the heat this month. As we draw ever closer to the end of summer and the beginning of fall, we’re getting a wealth of scary titles to get us super hyped about every horror lover’s favorite time of the year. Don’t wait for September and October to start reading scary books. You’ll want to pick up all ten of these novels right now.

There were a number of celebrities who passed away within the past week, including two notable actresses: Shelley Duvall and Shannen Doherty. Shelley Duvall passed away on Thursday July 11th at her home in Blanco, Texas. The cause of death was complications from diabetes and news of her death was confirmed by her partner Dan Gilroy.

Francine Pascal, a legend of millennial YA literature, has died at the age of 92. If you’re under the age of 30 or so, you came of age in a book world with robust YA offerings, and I sincerely love that for you. For those of us who grew up in the late ’80s and early ’90s, though, young adult literature wasn’t really a thing. Back then, the library had a “teen” section, and it was mostly populated with thrillers by Lois Duncan and R.L. Stine (where my Fear Street girlies at?) and Francine Pascal’s Sweet Valley High series, which was what you graduated to reading when you decided you were too old to admit that you still loved The Baby-Sitters Club.

Sci-Fi and Horror and Queer Books, Oh My!

One of, if not the, most influential prizes for a single work of fiction has announced their 2024 long list of contenders. The Booker Prize is awarded to a work of fiction written in English, from writers of any nationality, published in the UK or Ireland. This year’s slate of 13 longlist finalists include three debut novels and six works by authors who have been honored by the prize before. It also includes the first Dutch and first Native American authors to be honored, as well as eight women and five men.

In mid-June, we wrote about how the Tattered Cover bookstore had filed for bankruptcy, and how it had accepted Barnes & Noble’s offer of $1.83 million. On July 30th, the federal bankruptcy court the sale was waiting on approved Barnes & Noble’s acquisition of the indie bookstore, which includes four stores in Denver. Tattered Cover will be allowed to keep its name, branding, and its nearly 70 employees in the transition.

The first Sweet Valley High book came out in 1983, and it soon sparked 182 more books in the series as well as spin-offs like Sweet Valley Kids, Sweet Valley Twins, Sweet Valley Junior High, and Sweet Valley University, among others. It was also adapted into a TV series that ran from 1994 to 1997, and Sweet Valley Twins was recently made into a graphic novel series.

People experiencing homelessness around Denver can sometimes be seen with these bloody, weeping wounds.
