TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – In this From the Archives report from 2012, Spring brought a plentiful season of fishing.

Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center will be closing for $4.5 million renovations

Jim Matthews, from the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, and his team were busy for spawning season.

“Right now, this is our bread and butter time. This is where we spawn and rear Florida largemouth bass fingerlings,” Matthews said.

It is likely when catching one of the bass here in East Texas that it came from the fishery center in Athens.

“We stocked up 5.9 million Florida largemouth bass fingerlings in this region of the state, in the reservoirs,” Matthews said.

In 2011, officials reported almost half a million fish restocked in East Texas.

“It looks, so far, that this year is going to be a really good year,” Matthews said.
