West Rusk CCISD voters to decide on $26M bond to help improve elementary school, band hall

NEW LONDON, Texas ( KETK ) — The West Rusk County Consolidated Independent School District will hold a bond election on Saturday that if passed, will improve facilities in the district.
The over $26 million bond will allow for renovations and additions to the elementary campus and band hall. The school said the elementary school has not received a campus-wide improvement since it was built in 1935.
The improvements to the elementary campus would include safety and security additions with controlled entryways. It will also include new classrooms including a literacy room, science project room, reading intervention classroom and a resource classroom. Other amenities include faculty workroom and restrooms, custodial closets, main electrical room, mechanical room and general storage.
The proposed elementary would cost $22,808,779.
The current band hall houses 6th grade, Junior High, High School bands and serves as a horn and uniform storage.
The proposed facility will include a rehearsal hall, instrument storage, ensemble room, administrative offices and easy access to the football stadium for games and practices.
The district said the existing band hall would be split between bands into varsity and junior varsity levels for concert seasons and will serve as a place for rehearsals and instrument storage.
The school they have partnered with Samco Capital as their financial planner for the 2024 bond.
West Rusk CCISD said the 2023-2024 I&S tax rate is currently $0.3200. If passed, the 2024 bond would raise the amount by $0.1585 to $0.4785 to raise $26,403,037.

Election day is Saturday May 4 and people can vote at West Rusk Administration Building or the Rusk County Elections Office from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
