TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – Tyler Legacy High School dedicated their field house to former head football coach, Mike Owens.

Starting in the late ’90s, Owens dedicated 15 years to building up the team.

Former players and coaches all came out to witness the unveiling. Owens described how honored he is to have his name on the building.

“It’s humbling to be able to walk up here and see my name on this fieldhouse,” Owens said.

Owens coached several Tyler Legacy teams from 1996 to 2010. He led the Red Raiders to five district championships and numerous playoffs, but more than anything he was known for instilling greatness in his players both on and off the field.

“You don’t get buildings named after you just to win a few of football games. You get your name on buildings by winning the hearts of the people you serve,” Andy Long, former Tyler Legacy athletic director, said.

One of Owens’ greatest memories is making school history. He took the team all the way to their state championship in 2004. The only state championship title the school has so far.

“Owens was an amazing coach. I really loved playing for him because he brought the best out of all of his players,” former state championship quarterback Josh Hill said. “His legacy if I have to say in one word is hard work, commitment and always go for what you want. That’s what he brought out in his players commitment and dedication to grind to the process and to win.”

Owens wants current players to know when they walk into the building to give it their all and continue to work hard.

His legacy will continue to shine through each Red Raider every time they step on the field and for years to come.
