TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – Tyler railroad crossings in high traffic areas will now be improved as a part of a $600,000 project that was approved on Wednesday.

City of Tyler proposes $255 million budget for 2025

According to City of Tyler officials, a 2022 study recommended that one-way downtown streets be changed to two-way and to do so several railroad crossings need to be configured.

The crossings that need to be changed include East Locust Street, East Ferguson Street and East Erwin Street, officials said.

“To change the Locust, Ferguson, and Erwin Street railroad crossings from one-way to two-way requires considerable coordination with [Union Pacific Rail Road] and several agreements that must be negotiated,” City Engineer Darin Jennings said.

Reportedly the process to get plans approved with UPPR is estimated to take between 18 to 24 months.

The $600,000 project was approved by the Tyler City Council and will be funded by the Half-Cent Sales Tax Fund, a release said.

The City of Tyler also said the Railroad Crossing Improvements Project will also include the crossing at Lake Street but to rework the grades since it is frequently used by people entering midtown.
