9-year-old fractures multiple bones on Abilene ISD playground, mom says she was never notified

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – A 9-year-old Abilene ISD student at Taylor Elementary School is recovering after she suffered a playground injury.

According to her mother Teonnda Payne, on Thursday, August 15th, around 11:00 a.m., 4th grader Alonna Barrow was on the playground on the swings when she fell off and landed on her arms. Her daughter then went to the nurse, where she was just given ice and sent back to her classroom.

“Then it really hurt, and I could not move my wrists, so I went to the nurse, and she only gave me ice, and when I went to the class I couldn’t do work or anything, and it was so hard for me to do stuff,” explained Alonna.

Alonna shared she was forced to write by her teacher but was unable to due to the pain of her injuries.

“She told me her teacher was fussing at her because she could not write and do her work for the rest of the day. Alonna came off the bus around 4:00 p.m. She came crying, and when she came in the first thing, I noticed was her hands. . .like she just got done punching a brick wall they were so swollen, so I took her to the ER and then they told me both of her hands are fractured and bones in both of her arms,” expressed Payne.

The next day on Friday, Payne went back to Taylor Elementary to talk to her nurse. where she said she was told the nurse said she did not give her a call because she has a lot of students to care for and did not think the injury was severe.

Abilene ISD releasing a statement on Sunday to address the playground incident, but Payne says an apology wont repair how long her daughter had to suffer in pain.

“It’s not acceptable to me. I mean their apology is cool and all, but it does not account for the nurse and the staff. The nurse should have called me at least because it could have way worse than just her arms,” added Payne.

In terms of what comes next, Payne said it will take her daughter 6-to-12 weeks to recover. In the meantime, Alonna will do school from home, but Payne is worried her daughter will fall behind. She’s unsure what needs to be done for it to be made right but adds it’s her daughter’s decision if she wants to stay at Taylor Elementary or switch to another campus.
