TLYER, Texas ( KETK ) – The Birdwell Dual Language Immersion School in Tyler kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with their annual Raspa dance on Monday morning.

Why Hispanic Heritage Month begins September 15th

The Tyler ISD school’s students lined the Birdwell hallways while dressed in traditional folkloric attire for the dance and celebration which included great music and food.

“The majority of our students are of Mexican descent. Even though at Birdwell we honor Spanish, we celebrate multiple countries where Spanish is spoken. For us and our student body and representation, we kick it off by celebrating La Raza, which is tied to our Mexican ancestry.”

Mina Naranjo, Birdwell Dual Language School Principal

They’ll continue celebrating all month long by making Carnaval masks, reading stories, hosting international booths and playing a ‘Copa Entre Generaciones’ soccer game between students and staff.
