SMITH COUNTY, Texas ( KETK ) – The arrest documents of a Tyler man who led deputies on a motorcycle chase Tuesday morning depict an aggravated robbery days before.

Man found dead under unoccupied tow truck in Carthage, police say

According to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, 34-year-old Charles Griffith was arrested after evading deputies and on an active warrant.

Griffith’s arrest documents said the sheriff’s office received a report at around 11:48 p.m. on Thursday. The caller told deputies that multiple people kicked in the front door of her Highway 271 home and robbed her.

The resident said Griffith had a gun and was pointing it at her, while the other people attempted to steal her TV, according to the affidavit.

A witness told detectives that Griffith threw the TV in the yard and the group left in their Audi, the affidavit said. The witness then told detectives where she believed Griffith lived.

Documents said that around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a deputy saw Griffith, who was wanted for the aggravated robbery, driving a black Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Northeast Loop 323.

According to the affidavit, the deputy then proceeded to pursue Griffith who began travelling at high speeds. At one point the deputy reportedly saw as Griffith began driving head-on into oncoming traffic in attempts to flee.

The motorcycle chase eventually ended when Griffith travelled through a Pearl Street home and the on-foot chase began.

Griffith jumped over a chain link fence and the deputy followed, where he was able to place restraints on Griffith’s wrists, the affidavit said.

A witness told authorities that during the chase, they saw the motorcyclist throw a black backpack into the grassy median near Bobcat.

The contents of the backpack recovered were a digital scale, a medical vial, a pill bottle with three white pills inside, a water bottle, blue candy, a wallet, a pink lighter, a rubber hose and a plastic bag with 120 grams of methamphetamine.

The affidavit said the amount of meth seized “is not a normal amount for personal use, and is generally broken up into smaller amounts for distribution and sale.”

Griffith was booked into the Smith County Jail and charged for aggravated robbery, evading arrest with a vehicle and manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance. He is being held on a combined bond of $1,850,000.
