TYLER,  Texas ( KETK ) – East Texans are jumping into action, sending life-saving aid to Florida and helping families being deeply impacted by Hurricane Helene.

Hurricane Helene slammed into Florida late last night with the National Hurricane Center reporting winds of up to 140 miles per hour. The storm has left behind major damage and dangerous flooding causing setting several East Texas relief organizations into motion.

“When someone is in need and someone needs your help you offer it,” said Texans on Mission representative John Hall. “That’s what it’s what Christians do that’s what Texans do we offer to encourage help each other up in difficult situations.”

Texans on Mission has boots on the ground in Florida but is also planning to send several more teams to areas hit the hardest.

“We have partners who are already doing flood recovery work in the Tampa area, and we are looking to deploy teams somewhere along the path of the hurricane,” said Hall. “We have flood recovery teams who will go in and rip out everything that’s gotten wet after a flood.”

Of course, Texans on Mission isn’t the only East Texas organization’s heading east bound either.

“Currently we have several East Texas volunteers that are already on the ground in Florida, more on the way,” said Karen Holt, executive director of the East Texas chapter of the Red Cross. “We know that that’s Florida we know that that’s Georgia but we are here locally supporting those efforts it really takes a community, a very large community, when you have that large of a disaster.”
