TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar visited Tyler on Tuesday to discuss the $775,000 in grant money Smith County recently received from his office.

This visit was part of his Good For Texas Tour, which allows Hegar to travel to counties receiving Rural Law Enforcement grants from his office. The Smith County Sheriff’s Department got half a million dollars for safety equipment for all deputies and patrol vehicles. Another $275,000 went to the District Attorney’s office, helping them increase pay for all of their 32 assistant district attorneys.

Hegar’s office has awarded $125.7 million in grants for 502 recipients throughout the Lone Star State. Counties with populations of 300,000 or less are eligible for grant funding.

“We need to provide resources, whether that’s equipment and/or salaries to make sure the men and women that are out on our streets and in the prosecutors office can maintain and keep our communities safer,” Hegar said.

As Comptroller, Hegar is the chief steward of Texas’ finances and has been in office since 2014.
