GRAND SALINE, Texas ( KETK ) – There’s always a lot of Indians football pride this time of the year in the “Salt Capital of Texas” but maybe even more so this fall.

This year’s Grand Saline Indians squad is 5-0 and rolling into Friday night’s district showdown at rival Edgewood with tons of momentum.

50th annual Salt Festival pours through Grand Saline

“We’ve been pretty focused from the word ‘Go’ about what our goals were when we started this season,” Grand Saline head football coach Joe Drennon said.

The Indians have certainly met their preseason goals at the midway point of this season and Drennon said injuries last season paved the way for younger players to step in and gain valuable experience.

“It’s made us better this year because of last year. I think our kids knew coming in that we had a chance to be pretty good if we do what we’re supposed to do,” Drennon said.

So how do the Indians avoid complacency after their 5-0 start?

    Drennon has just the answer.

“There’s that old quote Nick Saban used to say about don’t eat the rat poison. You know, you guys come along, y’all start videoing us and putting us in the papers and all that and they go to thinking they’re really good and we still got a whole lot of football left to play,” Drennon said.

Seniors Colt Boyd and Carson Brown summed up what makes this year’s team so tough in one word: physicality.

“We’re physical. We’re for sure physical. We always you know we got the heart. We go in there and we play the hardest we can,” Boyd said.

“We hit each other and we hit each other hard. So we get each other prepared every game for really anything,” Brown added.

Brown and his teammates have had the Edgewood game circled for a while.

“Oh man. I mean we’ve waited for this game all year. The trash talk leading up to it. The fans going at it I mean, hey, this is probably one of the biggest rivalries in Texas,” Brown said.

After missing last year’s playoffs, the Indians aren’t just satisfied with getting back to the postseason, they want to make a push for state.

“I wanna go far. I wanna play ’til Christmas,” Brown said.

Grand Saline (5-0) plays at Edgewood (4-2) Friday night in what is our Week 7 Friday Football Fever Game of the Week. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at I. T. James Memorial Stadium in Edgewood.
