The scammer told the victim they won a large sum of money, but that they must pay taxes on the winnings before receiving it. Some residents reported receiving physical papers in the mail to appear more legitimate.

Police say the scammer will prompt you to withdraw cash from your bank account and create money orders. Money orders are often difficult or completely unable to be tracked. Victims are then out thousands of dollars and never receive any winnings.

Kettering PD is urging everyone to share this scam warning with friends and loved ones.

“It appears they may be targeting the senior community,” said KPD in a social media post .

Residents are encourages to contact local law enforcement before sending money in situations like this. Kettering PD says officers can help you determine whether or not the claim is legitimate.
