A Key Largo man who served eight years in prison for his involvement in the 2015 double murder of a Tavernier couple was arrested for cocaine and marijuana possession Thursday, June 20, following a traffic stop on U.S. 1.

Adrian Luis Demblans, 43, was charged with possessing .5 grams of cocaine, .5 grams of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, as well as operating an unregistered motor vehicle, according to a news release from Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Adam Linhardt.

Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped a GMC Yukon, driven by Demblans, around 11 p.m. near Mile Marker 100 because the registration was not assigned to that vehicle. Cocaine-related paraphernalia was observed in clear view as the deputies attempted to identify the vehicle’s VIN number, which had been covered. The drugs were found in the subsequent search.

Demblans was released from a Florida prison in 2023 after serving time for his role in the murder of Tara Rosado, 26, and Carlos Ortiz, 30, in Tavernier. In April 2017, Demblans, the getaway driver, turned state’s evidence in exchange for a 10-year sentence after being implicated in the murders of Ortiz and Rosado.

In a retrial in May, Jeremy Macauley was found guilty on two counts of murder in the execution-style shootings. He received two life sentences without the possibility of parole.

On Friday, June 21, a 39-year-old Marathon was arrested following a litany of violations following a traffic stop on U.S. 1 in Key Largo.

Eric Kurt Crawford was charged with DUI (with multiple previous convictions), driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest, possession of cocaine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also cited for possessing open containers of alcohol in the vehicle, speeding, failure to display registration and having no insurance, Linhardt said.

Crawford was stopped driving a Ford pickup near Mile Marker 107 at approximately 9 p.m. for driving 58 mph in a 45-mph zone. Crawford was argumentative, failed to provide his license and smelled of alcohol. He resisted as the Sheriff’s Office was attempting to place him in handcuffs, Linhardt said.

A baggie containing a small amount of cocaine was subsequently found.

On Saturday, June 22, a 60-year-old Marathon with a warrant for a previous cocaine-related violation was arrested and now faces additional cocaine charges.

Stacy Robert Jones was charged with violation of probation, battery, possession of cocaine, and resisting arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office was called to a Sombrero Beach Road residence at approximately 2:02 a.m. regarding a domestic incident. Stacy attempted to flee but retreated into the residence upon the Sheriff’s Office arrival. An adult female at the residence stated Jones grabbed her by the neck during an argument. There were no life-threatening injuries reported.

Jones was found hiding in a bedroom closet. Approximately 2.1 grams of crack cocaine was found in his possession.

On Sunday, June 23, a 19-year-old Boca Raton, Florida man was arrested for hit-and-run and multiple other charges after fleeing from Sheriff’s Office deputies on U.S. 1 in the Upper Keys.

Maxwell Daniel Burgan was charged with DUI, DUI causing property damage, fleeing-and-eluding, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash and possession of a fake ID, Linhardt said.

Burgan was observed speeding through a construction zone in a Chevrolet truck northbound near Mile Marker 84 around 12:30 a.m. Burgan fled while continuing to speed — driving recklessly in wrong lanes and swerving through traffic. He struck another vehicle but did not stop.

The truck’s tires were successfully spike near Mile Marker 89, but Burgan did not stop — driving on two rims. Burgan continued to drive recklessly through a construction zone at Mile Markers 97-99. The truck’s remaining two tires were successfully spiked near Mile Marker 99, whereupon Burgan crashed into two separate vehicles as well as trees in a median before coming to a stop, Linhardt said

None of the other drivers or passengers suffered serious injuries. Burgan was taken to Mariners Hospital prior to jail for injuries to his arm.

Burgan admitted to drinking before the incident and fleeing from the Sheriff’s Office.
