Susannah Wells is a local actress and all-around performer extraordinaire. She was spotted at Andy’s Cabana dressed as Death, which is on par for Susannah on any given day, really. Susannah is on theme whenever you find her around town, whether she is part of the show or not.

Susannah’s formative years were spent in Texas and Oklahoma, but she came to Key West after many years in Washington, D.C. About 12 years ago, she visited one of her oldest and dearest friends. On that visit, Key West just called to her. She was utterly enchanted. Three months later, she became a Key West resident.

She said, “Our community is extremely special. For creatives, I feel Key West is receptive, supportive, and continues to be a place where artists can present new works. If you have a dream, an idea and the means to produce it, Key West has a venue for you. And the community will be there.”

For her contributions to the community and her creative spirit, Susannah Wells is the most recent recipient of the Community Foundation of the Florida Key’s Keep Key West Weird honor.

The Keep Key West Weird Fund at the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys was started by Key West resident Tony Falcone, one of the founders of Fantasy Fest, along with local investment manager and philanthropist Todd German.

Future recipients will be featured in The Keys Citizen in the coming weeks and months.

Representatives from local non-profit organizations whose missions embrace individuality, creativity and artistry present the awards, each including a gift card.

The awards are made entirely unexpectedly, impromptu and randomly, any time of day in Key West, on the streets or a public place, not part of an organized costume or scheduled event. Awardees are contributed by non-profits, not selected or endorsed by the fund advisors or Community Foundation staff.

The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys manages more than 160 funds and endowments throughout the Keys and is a charitable non-profit organization. More than $32 million in grants have been made to student scholarships, arts and culture, beautification and preservation of the Keys, health and human services, hurricane relief and youth programs during the past 27 years.
