    Things got heated at the 5-Alarm Key Lime Pie Challenge, held appropriately at the Key West Firehouse Museum.

    Jeremy Hackworth of Key West was brave enough to sample chef and author David Sloan’s creation, which added cayenne infused graham cracker crumbs and habanero pepper cream.

    Hackworth said the confection struck an outstanding balance of sweet and spicy.

    Sloan, author of “The Key West Key Lime Cookbook,” and his wife, Heather May Sloan, were serving free samples of their spicy spiked pie, finishing it off with a jalapeño topper.

    While at the Alex Vega Key West Firehouse Museum, guests were encouraged to check out the museum’s new haunted history audio tour or discover the fascinating firefighting history in Key West.
